Writing Family Essays for Fun and Profit

Whether you are writing about events as they occur, or bringing genealogical research to life, the family story is a powerful tool for sharing your experience. In addition to capturing priceless family moments and history on paper, writing family essays is a great way to hone your writing craft, get published, and even make money. This talk covers the basics of how to find time to write, capture life’s important moments on paper, edit your work, and find markets for publication.

Breaking Into Local and Regional Family Magazines

Journaling
Writing a journal is an extremely rewarding and renewing hobby. And for more serious writers, journal can help to “prime the pump”, hone your writing craft, and keep track of ideas for future development. Tool Kit for Building Your Writer’s Platform
You’re a writer. You keep hearing you need a platform, and you sort of know what that is. But where do you begin. This talk covers easy-to-use tools for building a writing presence online, in print, and in person. Lela left a traditional job in 2006 to pursue writing full time. Learn how she leveraged free resources to build a loyal readership made up of the target demographic for her fiction (and often got paid for it!). The class covers several specific techniques for building platform including social media (Facebook, Twitter, online communities), blogging, public speaking. It also teaches students how to ensure their efforts are efficient, effective, and ultimately working toward the goal of getting published. This class is designed for beginning and experienced writers.

Need a class tailored to your group or company? I can do that too.

The class I took from Lela was a perfect introduction to online writing. I entered the class knowing nothing about how to launch an online writing career, and I left with all the tools and resources I needed to make it happen. Her ongoing support and guidance after the class was over has been invaluable! She has really brought me into the online writing community–something I would never have been able to do on my own.
